在乔·斐瑞——美国老牌乐队 "Aero Smith" 主唱——上一张个人专辑推出时，他的乐队以及他的第一段婚姻同时宣告破裂。原因很简单：因为当时的他破产，酗酒以及沉湎于毒品。如今，是乔戒除毒品以及重拾婚姻的第20个年头，他重组了史密斯飞船乐队，其专辑销量已突破百万大观。同时，乔也即将推出他的最新个人专辑《乔·斐瑞》。现在的他，作为一个摇滚红星以及四个孩子的父亲，在回顾他如何戒除毒品，重拾辉煌时，感触颇深：
家庭让人产生动力 曾经的乔在事业上一蹶不振，放着一堆谱好的作品不去录制。事实上，乔把时间都花在了毒品和酒精上。而去年和乐队另一成员史·泰勒的一番对话改变了乔，泰勒说"你知道，我们大概只能再过20个夏天了。”那时的乔已经54岁了，他突然想到，如果某天自己骑着摩托撞死在大树上，那他的妻子和孩子们也许就要靠救济过活了。正是这种家庭的责任感鼓舞了乔，让他产生了向上的动力。于是，乔彻底屏弃了糜乱的生活，开始专注与歌唱事业。
正视自己的过去，对家人诚恳 乔有四个孩子，他在他们面前从不隐瞒自己的过去。对于自己的吸毒史以及吸毒的危害，乔会经常拿出来和孩子们讨论。在他们的周围，每当有人因为吸毒过量而死亡时，乔就会对孩子说：看，他是吸毒死的。乔说：“孩子们总会长大，也会在许多问题上做出自己的选择。把自己的经历拿出来和他们分享，就能让他们在面对这些问题的时候，能想到‘这些在我爸爸身上曾经发生过’从而能做出的选择。”而与孩子互动讨论这些话题，也能时刻告诫自己远离毒品，为孩子们做一个榜样。
用健身来抵抗毒瘾 常年服食毒品，让乔每次演出都气喘吁吁，很难坚持演完。那时，乔才意识到，只要吸毒就不可能有健康。现在，乔每周去健身中心三次，每次都坚持做20到30分钟的有氧运动。在巡回演出前，乔还会把运动量提高一倍。很快，他对于毒品的以来程度大大降低了，并且，他也恢复了在舞台上的光芒四射。
信守忠贞的爱情 作为一个摇滚歌星，总有许多疯狂的女歌迷愿意为乔献身。而乔从不允许自己这样做，因为他有一个彼此深爱的妻子。乔的理论很有趣，他说“有一种用来戒除毒瘾的药叫美沙酮，她的作用就是截断大脑里的某个神经元，让毒品无法发挥作用。而爱情也是这样的，当我爱上某个人的时候，我的心里就没有别的女人的位置了。而我的妻子也确实像美沙酮一样，一直鼓励着我，照顾我，让我彻底放弃了毒品。”忠贞爱情让乔重新获得了健康的人生
保持酷劲，坚毅如故！ 当38岁的乔重组乐队，当他放上自己的CD，敲打起架子鼓的时候，他便又生龙活虎起来。要滚是乔的事业，是比毒品更让乔狂热的激素。因为自己的坚毅，因为自己的酷，乔用音乐的信仰取代了毒品的支配。而今，55岁的他说“当我弹奏我的电吉他，发出震耳欲聋的音乐时，那种感觉简直是太酷了！”
